Some of you might be wondering why I am sharing about Suicide Prevention on my account. 13 years ago I lost my little brother to suicide. My page is about #emergencypreparedness and I consider this topic something that is incredibly important to talk about.

I have felt impressed to share more about my story of losing my little brother in hopes that I can bring more awareness to suicide prevention.

When we lost my brother I had zero tools, education, or experience with suicide. I didn't see any warning signs. I had no idea my brother was struggling mentally. I didn't know how to process his sudden death and I didn't want to tell anyone how he died, I couldn't wrap my head around ANY of it.

Just a few days before he passed away he came over to my house for a haircut. He ate lunch with my kids and I. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on our back patio to be exact. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember laughing with him, my kids playing with him (they adored their uncle), and I remember watching him drive away, having no idea that would be the last time I would see him in this life.

I was a young mom with three little kids and a baby on the way when my brother died. I had experienced big challenges in my life and marriage before losing my brother, but I had never felt so hopeless that I would ever consider ending my life. I could not comprehend how my brother could have felt that way or why he made the choice that he did.

It wasn't until a few years after my brother's tragic passing that I found myself in circumstances so painful and dark that I finally began to understand and have more empathy for my brother.

I can't tell you how many people have said to me something along the lines of, “Suicide is the most selfish thing a person can do”.

I can tell you from years of processing this grief and dealing with my own darkest days and traumas, that statement couldn't be further from the truth.

It’s almost 9 pm and I am ready to crawl into bed after a LONG day! I mean there is no way I will fall asleep this early, but relaxing in bed by 9 pm sounds amazing!!

Dinner at 5 pm and in bed by 9 pm sounds dreamy these days. Not my reality with teenagers at home though 😅.

I originally intended to post these weekly challenges 12 straight weeks in a row, but then life got super busy for me and I needed to take a step by from posting them and focus on my family.

I have had this post ready to go and in my camera roll for so long now, but it felt like every time I went to post, something came up. Emergency preparedness is something that doesn't always go as we planned or hoped for, my goal is to just keep at it, and keep plugging away at my personal goals. Thank you for being patient with me as I work on this and share about my journey here on @foodstoragemama 😌.

This morning tears fell down my cheeks in my yoga

This morning tears fell down my cheeks in my yoga class when I felt a distinct impression that I needed to talk about suicide prevention on this platform.

My page is about emergency preparedness and I can't think of a bigger emergency than having tools when you or a loved one are suffering mentally.

Thirteen years ago I lost my little brother to suicide. All these years later I feel immense amounts of healing and then out of nowhere, all it takes is the spirit whispering to me, “Share about your experience with suicide” to crack my heart right open again.

I laid there at the end of yoga today, in our final pose, and I was so grateful the lights were turned down low and that it was a hot yoga class, that way it just looked like I was sweating instead of crying. There is absolutely nothing wrong with crying, but in a room full of strangers I was feeling particularly vulnerable.

The song, “You can’t rush your healing” by @trevorhallmusic came up on the playlist and it was this beautiful and peaceful reminder to me that healing and grief aren't linear, they ebb and flow, and although I have experienced healing, I still have more healing ahead of me, and that's ok 🖤.

September is both National Suicide Prevention Month and National Emergency Preparedness Month.

I have shared bits and pieces of my story of my healing journey here before. Throughout September I am going to be sharing more about my experience and the things I have learned the past 13 years. I will also be sharing tips and resources for suicide prevention.

I would love for you to join me in fasting and prayer for our country tomorrow! Tell me in the poll if you are willing to participate 🖤🙏🏼.

I have been feeling a push to ask others to join me in my monthly fasts for awhile now. I kept putting off the feeling worried people might think it was weird or possibly be offended by it.

This morning I had a distinct impression to follow through and ask if you will consider joining me tomorrow.

I love The United States of America. Never in my lifetime have things felt so unsettling, divisive, and scary. I am praying hard for this beautiful country and I know that when we come together in prayer powerful things can happen.

I would love for you to participate in anyway that feels authentic and peaceful to you. In the images on this post I explained more about how I personally fast.

I would love to hear more about what types of prayer and fasting you do!!

This post is intended for everyone, those with varying religious belief’s and those with varying political views!

Also if you are not religious or do not pray, I would love for you to still participate in the fasting or prayers (etc) to the God of your understanding or your higher power!
